We would like to present the chronology of the Facebook, reflecting the most significant events and figures that accompanied the growth of the social giant.
Let’s have a look on the main milestones of the social network history:
2004
- February – Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes at Harvard.
- March – Facebook expanded and became available for the students of the Stanford, Columbia and Yale university.
- June – Facebook moved to Palo Alto (the historical center of the Silicon Valley).
- September – Functions “The Wall” and “Groups” began to work in Facebook.
- December – Facebook reached one million users
2005
- May – Company Accel Partners invested 12.7 million dollars in Facebook start-up.
- May – Facebook became available in networks of 800 universities.
- August – The company was officially called “Facebook” (original title thefacebook.com).
- September – Facebook became available for all high schools in America.
- October – Added the “Photos”.
- October – Facebook became available in all international universities and school networks.
- December – Facebook reached 5.5 million active users.
2006
- April – Facebook got 27.5 million from Greylock Partners and Meritech Capital Partners.
- April – Facebook became available for mobile devices.
- May – Facebook became available in the business network.
- August – Facebook, in cooperation with Microsoft began strategic partnership to launch banners.
- August – Startof the “Developers Platform” on Facebook.
- August – Facebook added the “Comments” function.
- September – Everyone could join Facebook.
- September – News feed was added to the Facebook.
- November – Share function, which operated on more than 20 partner platforms.
- December – Facebook reached 12 million active users.
2007
- February – Facebook started a gift shop (which would be turned off three years later).
- March – 2 million users in Canada and 1 million users in England.
- April – New Design.
- April – 20 million active users.
- May – Ads market.
- May – The first conference F8.
- October – 50 million active users.
- October – Microsoft acquired the rights to place international ads on Facebook.
- November – Facebook provided the opportunity to advertise.
2008
- February – Facebook became available in English and French languages.
- March – Facebook updated privacy settings.
- April – Facebook introduced a translator application, which supported 22 languages.
- April – Chat appeared in Facebook.
- August – 100 million active users.
- December – Facebook Connect is opened (Users can use their Facebook profile on other sites).
2009
- January – 150 million active users.
- February – “Like” feature was introduced.
- February – Facebook created OpenID.
- April – 200 million active users.
- May – Digital Sky Technologies invested $ 200 million in Facebook.
- June – Users’ pages got names instead of numbers in the address bar.
- August – Facebook acquired FriendFeed.
- September – 300 million active users.
2010
- February – 400 million active users.
- May – button “Like” started to work on external sites.
- July – Facebook Questions Beta.
- July – 500 million active users.
- August – Facebook announced new locations check-in feature.
2011
- January – Goldman Sachs & Digital Sky Technologies invested $ 500 million in Facebook.
- January – New profile design.
- April – Open Compute Project.
- June – Face recognition for photos was launched.
- July – Facebook launched video chat together with Skype.
- September – Page subscription feature.
- September – Timeline appeared. OpenGraph Redesigned.

- December – Timeline became available for all users.
- December – 845 million active users, 483 million of them visited Facebook every day.
